 Editorial Illustration Ideas and Concepts

This piece by Harry Campbell is part of a series of illustrations that he made in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. The meaning behind this particular piece is clear to the viewer, driving in the fact that the victims of this tragedy were just kids, the figure holding onto a teddy bear while curled up in fear. This collection was picked up by the New York Times.

This is another piece in the same collection, the blood coming through the doors is graphic and forms the stripes of the American flag. This puts forward the point that shootings have become such a massive problem in America and yet almost nothing is done to change that.

Editorial Image Making Processes

These editorial pieces by Martin Reznik are made via Linocut printing. I think that lino printing has such a unique handmade quality that really makes pieces eye-catching. The mark making is always slightly sharp and gives pieces a gritty and grungy feel. In my opinion it also makes pieces feel aged, in a charming way. Before printing and photograph technology, newspapers relied on illustrators to convey visual stories, one of the ways they could mass produce these illustrations was with relief printing.

Magazine Design (page layouts, type, photograph and illustration)

NORK

Nork is a Norwegian magazine that speaks upon art, culture, lifestyle and creativity in Northern Norway. Its a bilingual magazine, printed in both English and Norwegian for good accessibility. The full bled pages of the Nork magazine are fully immersive and really draw the readers attention. The pages are split into double page spreads of illustrations and pages with both image and writing. This edition uses trippy and surreal imagery to captivate the reader. I really love the style and layout of this magazine, its unique and very visually interesting and the use of collage gives it an almost dream-like feel.

Magazine Topic/Genre (discovering magazines on your personal interests)
INSIDE ARTZINE

INSIDE artzine is an artscum magazine that features dark, weird and gory art. Artscum has been described as an art movement that focusses on the idealization of ugliness. This kind of art has always really interested me and has inspired my art for a very long time. I'm infatuated by all things unsettling and to find a magazine that was dedicated to that type of art was pleasantly surprising. The featured art is a wide variety of media, from digital and photography, to traditional and 3D. The fact that there's so many different art forms in one magazine makes for a very visually interesting read.

After finding this magazine I was extremely interested in what else was included so I decided to purchase an edition for myself. After it arrived I was simply blown away with the quality of the printing, the front and the back were both textured and in high definition.

Finding a magazine with this kind of art, I've realized is quite rare, so to find one with such high quality and for cheap too ( around £7) was amazing and I fully enjoyed the experience of viewing it. I'm very happy with the fact that it was mainly artwork with less writing as those are the kinds of media I like to consume and I find it keeps my interest for longer. All of the artists were listed too with Instagram and website links which was really useful.

Shintaro Kago

Shintaro Kago is a Japanese manga artist who's style I'm extremely intrigued by. His use of soft colours contrasted by the gory and surreal subject matter make for a weird and wonderful combination. Many of his manga have strongly satirical overtones, and deal with grotesque subjects such as extreme sex, scatology and body modification. His work creates a sense of just as much awe as discomfort
